Master Yourself
Back in 2016 I was a little lost in regard to what to do to be successful.
I was doing okay, but not great.
So I spent a long weekend, home alone, thinking and reading and sipping tea (maybe some bourbon too).
I thought of the 3 best things I could start doing immediately.
Mind:
Read one non-fiction book a week. You’ll learn more in 52 weeks than you did in 4 years of college.
Movement/Meals:
Walk at least a mile a day. Try to lift some (relative to you) heavy stuff throughout your day.
And I’m sneaking this in…100+ grams of protein and 25+ grams of fiber a day, hit those numbers and your diet mostly takes care of itself.
Money:
Stop making excuses and save/invest 20% of your salary. (10 to investing, 10 to emergency savings).
The peace of mind it will buy you is worth more than anything you’re wasting your money on currently.
Once you hit 6 months of bills saved up, move that 10% from emergency to investing.
Master Your Money
How to build wealth:
Step one: The Foundation (Growth + Gratitude)
Step two: The Money (Financial Education + Investing)
The formula is universal, but the answers are specific to you.
What do you want to grow toward? What are you grateful for?
What sort of financial education do you want? Cover the basics (budgeting, savings rate, etc.) but then what? Options? Real estate? Where do you want to invest your money? Stocks? Startups? Vacation rentals?
All that has to be answered by you. But you can use the formula to start.
Weekly Special
Your Guide to Stacking Habits for Compound Growth
Find your core tenets and build your life around them.
My Core Four are:
health
relationships
finances
work
All of my daily habits that I track fall into one of those categories. Conversely, I built my habits around those core tenets.
If I’m taking care of my Core Four, the rest of my life takes care of itself.
If you want a successful life: Build a system for success.
Health
The most important tenet, because without it, nothing else matters.
7+ hours of sleep
I’m strict about this. I turn off my electronics at 8pm so that by 10, I’m falling asleep. I wake up at 6 every morning, so I have to count backward.
Morning shake
I like to make a shake that lets me know, no matter what else happens today, you got your nutrients.
It’s berries, greens, whey, ginger, garlic and some powders (adaptogens, spices, lion’s mane).
10k steps
I’m in front of a computer for most of my day so I take care to get up and move. Many times I’ll read while walking…2 birds, 1 stone.
Workout
I have daily workouts planned for every day of the week. 4 days a week I focus on lifting. 2 days are bodyweight movements and 1 day for sprints.
Prehab
Every morning I follow a routine of movement prep, stretching and balance.
Recovery
Every evening I roll on a lacrosse ball, use a massage gun and have my girlfriend do neck traction.
Relationships
We’re social creatures and at the end of the day, if you don’t have good relationships all the money in the world can’t make you rich. You’re still poor as hell.
1 text
I select a family member or friend to touch base with and see how their life is going.
1 hour alone time with Lisa
My girlfriend and I are very in tune with each other, but a lot of that comes from the time we dedicate. I need at least one hour alone with her every night.
Dinner with kids
Life gets busy, families have a shit ton to do and get pulled in every direction. I aim to have dinner with Lisa and the kids most nights so we can talk about our day.
Finances
If you don’t manage your money, your whole life will be a mess.
Look up opportunities
I see where I can deploy money. What I can buy on a dip.
Track cash flow sheet
What comes in vs. what goes out, plus how much we invested this month.
Track monthly net worth snapshot
We track our assets vs. debts to see how our net worth is growing every month.
Work
Humans are meant to work and create. It’s a core facet of our nature.
Take care of 9–5
I love my 9–5 job. Pays me well, good benefits, learning opportunities, great culture, the works. So I obviously want to do a good job here and that’s my focus for a good chunk of the week.
Craft next week’s article, finetune tomorrow’s
I publish an article a day on Medium, so I keep a calendar. On any given day, I finetune the following day’s article and write next week’s article. Example, on Monday I write NEXT Monday’s article.
Work on newsletter
This one you’re reading :)
Throughout the week I work on it. I outline what I’m doing for Saturday and eventually fill in the details as the week goes along.
Social Media engagement plan
I set benchmarks for engagement. I want to comment on at least 5 posts on Medium, 5 posts on LinkedIn and 10 on Twitter, every day.
Homework
I’m finishing up my Bachelor’s so schoolwork is thrown in throughout the week. It’s an accelerated program, so it’s quite busy.
This is a busy schedule, I know. Time management helps here. I chunk my time every day. I should note- 6a-7a is always screen free, as is 8p-until bed.
Your schedule will look different. Find the core tenets that matter to you. Find the habits that work best. And then build your system.
Thanks for reading! If you found this valuable, please share with someone who could use it. See you next Saturday!
