Five to Focus on:
In a noisy world, it’s hard to know what’s good out there. Let me help.
Quote to ponder: A busy calendar and a busy mind will destroy your ability to create anything great. - Naval Ravikant
Stock to consider: GNOM (Global X Genomics And Biotechnology ETF). GNOM seeks to invest in companies that potentially stand to benefit from further advances in the field of genomic science, such as companies involved in gene editing, genomic sequencing, genetic medicine/therapy, computational genomics, and biotechnology.
Book to read: The Future is Faster Than You Think by Peter Diamandis. This became even more true 2 months after this book came out. Covid-19 has accelerated the future at a rate I don’t think even Peter saw coming. This is a must-read book, broken neatly into 3 riveting parts.
Show to enjoy: Hawkeye on Disney +. Ignore the slow start. This is a really refreshing show and the two leads have great chemistry. Tune out of real life and enjoy the ride.
Beer to sip: Frost IPA from New Trail. New Trail loves its hazy IPAs, which you should love because all the best IPAs are hazy. And they’ve perfected this style. A perfect winter day beer.
Master Yourself
We don’t necessarily equate Kobe and humility. But, look at this quote from Bryant:
“I’ll do whatever it takes to win games. Whether it’s sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate or hitting the game winning shot.”
I love this quote!
This is how I feel about my team. I love my co-workers, they’re my extended family. I’ll do whatever we need for us to be successful.
I’ll come in early, I’ll stay late, I’ll work over the weekend- whatever it takes for us to “win”. Nothing is beneath me and nothing is too much to ask. I would empty our trash cans at night if we needed it.
Great success requires humility. Are you ready to be that humble?
Master Your Money
If you’re carrying debt with a high interest rate (credit card debt comes to mind), do everything you can to pay it off now and/or early.
I had a car payment a few years ago that was 196/month, with 10% interest (ugh). I rounded up and paid 200/month and even that extra 4 dollars helped.
I realized I could easily pay the 200/month so I started paying 250/month with other little chunks thrown at it in between monthly payments.
A 6 year payment plan turned into a 4 year plan, saving me a couple thousand dollars.
Weekly Special:
3 Ways to Make Your Voice Matter to Others
Are you super smart? So are a lot of people. Do you know your stuff? So do a lot of people. Are you original? There’s a start. Being you is the best start. But originality is commonplace now too. So you need to be really, really you. Like super duper authentic.
I was offered a chance to write, for a rather big blog, a Star Wars themed article. I don’t like Star Wars. In fact, when I tried to watch the originals I truly thought it was a joke, a spoof movie. So I turned the offer down. I refuse to fake a knowledge of, or love for, Star Wars.
Now, ask me to write a Goodfellas themed or NFL themed article and I’m all yours. But I won’t write about what I don’t know and/or don’t care about. Neither should you. You shouldn’t be doing many things you don’t enjoy on some level.
So the 3 tips…
Focus on your strengths, forget your weaknesses. Trying to fix your weaknesses wastes a great deal of time. You’re better served by focusing on what you’re good at.
Speak like you speak, not the way you think a ‘professional’ speaks. Be proud of your voice.
Talk about what you love, even if it’s not popular. Your passion will shine through and others will fall in love with that passion.
Such simple advice- be you. But it’s really hard because pretty much everybody is trying to be somebody else. Don’t do that. You’re amazing and I want to hear more from YOU.
So, why should people listen to you? Because you’re authentic. And that is rare.
Thanks for reading and if you found this valuable, please share with someone who could use it. See you next Saturday!
