Master Yourself
This week I want to talk about something that’s so simple but changes your life dramatically.
Going first.
Say hi first.
Offer help first.
Offer to present first in groups.
Say sorry first.
Walk into the haunted house first (I’ll be doing that tonight).
Find a million other ways to “go first”.
There’s so much power in deciding to go first.
It almost always goes in your favor when you choose to go first.
It creates allies, it takes pressure off others and it’s easy way to serve both yourself and those around you.
Master Your Money
The only advice I’d bother giving my 12 year old self: Build your nest egg.
40 year old you will be so thankful 15 year old you started investing.
If you could’ve put 500/month away each month (easy when you live at home) you’d be sitting on half a mil at 40.
Don’t waste time not putting your money to work.
And you’re most likely older than 15, but the message remains the same. Start investing now, or keep investing now.
Your future self will be grateful.
Weekly Special
6 Sectors I’m Investing in for the Future
A big part of my financial freedom strategy is taking a look at future trends and picking what I think will take off.
As always, there’s risk with investing, but you can mitigate it.
How? One way is buying ETFs. Another way is taking the long view (planning to hold for 10+ years).
I’m a big fan of ETFs. Trying to pick individual stocks is a lot riskier (can be a lot more rewarding too though). ETFs (exchange traded funds) is a fund made up of multiple individual stocks. It allows for broad exposure within a sector.
So, let’s get to the 6 sectors I’m most excited about.
Fintech/Cryptocurrency
What is it?
Fintech (financial technology) is the application of technology to financial services offerings in order to improve their usability and delivery to customers.
A cryptocurrency (or “crypto”) is a digital currency that may be used to purchase goods and services, but it is secured by an online ledger and powerful cryptography.
Why am I interested?
The emphasis is on cashless transactions. The sector is gearing up to incorporate high-tech payment apps and systems to allow for quick online payments in lieu of cash. As a result, one of Fintech’s definite futures is for cash payments to become obsolete and for digital payments to become the new face of payments. Digital payments you say? Enter crypto. This market will be very volatile for a long time, but it will eventually pay off handsomely.
An actual ETF I own
BITQ (Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF)
Invest in the companies leading the new crypto economy. BITQ tracks an index designed with Bitwise’s industry expertise to identify the pioneering companies that generate the majority of their revenue from their crypto business activities
Sports betting/gambling
What is it?
Sports betting is predicting sports results and making a wager on the outcome of games.
Why am I interested?
Sports betting is only going to grow as restrictions are lifted. And the restrictions are being eased. Over the next 5 years I expect gambling to be legalized everywhere.
An actual ETF I own
BETZ (Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF)
The Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF (“BETZ ETF”) is designed to offer investors exposure to sports betting and iGaming industries.
Clean energy
What is it?
Renewable energy is useful energy derived from renewable resources that are regenerated naturally on a human timescale, such as carbon-neutral sources such as sunshine, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
Why am I interested?
One reason? It’s the right thing to do. We shouldn’t keep relying on fossil fuels. Second reason? The costs keep going down, which means the demand will keep going up, which will drive growth. Also, governments the world over are pushing green replacements. It all adds up to a bright future.
An actual ETF I own
ICLN (iShares Global Clean Energy ETF)
The iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN) seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of global equities in the clean energy sector.
Cannabis
What is it?
Cannabis (aka marijuana) is a psychoactive substance derived from the Cannabis plant.
Why am I interested?
It’s one of the fastest growing industries in the world. And I expect more interest in this as people shy away from your typical pain relief methods (harder drugs). People will also enjoy it recreationally, much like alcohol over the next decade in my opinion. As the demand grows, so will the stock prices.
An actual ETF I own
MSOS (AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF)
MSOS is the first and only actively managed U.S.-listed ETF with dedicated cannabis exposure focusing exclusively on U.S. companies, including multi-state operators. The portfolio manager allocates across an investable universe of U.S. companies spanning a variety of cannabis-related businesses.
REITs
What is it?
A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a corporation that owns and, in most circumstances, operates income-producing properties. REITs own a variety of commercial properties, including office and residential buildings, as well as warehouses, hospitals, shopping malls, hotels, and commercial forests.
Why am I interested?
REITs have typically provided competitive total returns through high, consistent dividend income and long-term capital growth. Their low correlation with other assets makes them an effective portfolio diversifier, helping to lower total portfolio risk while increasing returns.
An actual ETF I own
SRET (Global X SuperDividend REIT ETF)
The Global X SuperDividend® REIT ETF (SRET) invests in 30 of the highest dividend yielding REITs globally.
Robotics/Automation
What is it?
Robotics is a multidisciplinary field combining computer science and engineering. Robotics is the study of the design, manufacture, operation, and use of robots. Robotics aims to create devices that can support and help humans.
Automation refers to a group of technologies that lessen the need for humans to intervene in operations. Predetermining decision criteria, subprocess linkages, and related actions — and encoding those predeterminations in computers — reduces human intervention.
Why am I interested?
Automation has advanced significantly, and it is now widely used in a variety of fields. There are persistent fears that automation would eliminate jobs in certain areas; but data suggests that it can also create new jobs and lead individuals to new opportunities. Either way, automation is coming and it won’t stop. Robotics goes hand in hand.
An actual ETF I own
DRIV (Global X Autonomous And Electric Vehicles ETF)
The Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (DRIV) seeks to invest in companies involved in the development of autonomous vehicle technology, electric vehicles (“EVs”), and EV components and materials. This includes companies involved in the development of autonomous vehicle software and hardware, as well as companies that produce EVs, EV components such as lithium batteries, and critical EV materials such as lithium and cobalt.
