Worry vs. Work
We spend time focusing on shit, right? That’s inevitable. We’re always focused on something. Something has our attention. Something matters in this moment.
But the specific kind of time you spend focusing matters very much.
Time spent focused on things we can’t control: worry.
Time spent focused on things we can control: work.
What’s the takeaway?
Work more, worry less.
Once we begin to act, we find stress leaves our body. Humans aren’t meant to sit and fret. They’re meant to act.
Focusing on thoughts for too long with no action behind them, leads us down a path of worry.
But when we kick around an idea then decide on a plan of action, we move into work. The human brain prefers work mode.
So, spend almost all of your time focusing on things you can control.
I can’t control the weather, I can’t control what other people do but I can control my attitude about my day. I can control my habits and routines.
That’s where to keep your focus.
Focus on Options, Not Retirement
I focus on investing and building wealth. But as for retirement, I don’t plan on ever really doing it so I put enough for my employer match into my 401k and call it a day.
Sure, I’ll move on from 9–5 work eventually.
But with the internet, we can (and should) make more money right up until we die.
We have the best leverage ever known to man.
Use it.
Pull those levers and earn forever.
How to Get Hired Using the 3Cs
To get hired you need to show a company your 3Cs.
Without mastering this, you’re not going to land top tier employment. And competition for top jobs will only get steeper moving forward.
So, what are the 3Cs that companies want to see?
Competence
Commitment
Compatibility
Competence
What is it?
Competence is defined as a set of observable attributes and talents that enable and increase a job’s efficiency or performance.
Why is it important?
Anyone who is hiring you wants to see that you’re capable of handling your job and anything else that might be thrown your way.
How do you show it?
This is where not just education, but an actual portfolio can come in handy. Show what you’ve done, not just what you’ve learned. Do you have numbers to support you? That always helps.
Commitment
What is it?
A promise or a commitment to do something in the future. Basically, the promise that you’ll do your job very well.
Why is it important?
A company wants to see that you’re committed to your potential role as well as their overall mission. That you’re not looking to pop in, then leave. It costs a lot of money to bring a new hire on. Retention matters to employers, not just in regards to customers but also their talent.
How do you show it?
Ask good questions- how can I grow here, what’s the company’s long term mission, etc.. Imply a long term focus on your end. You’re looking to settle in for the long haul and you think this is the place to do it.
Compatibility
What is it?
Interpersonal compatibility is the long-term interaction between two or more people in terms of communication ease and comfort. Do you fit in, basically.
Why does it matter?
Because a lot of companies have realized that culture really matters. It can dictate the company’s overall success, because that day to day shit adds up. If your teams don’t appreciate your values or work well together, you’re sunk.
How do you show it?
Study the hell out of the company. Review their website, social media, the employees on LinkedIn. Do you fit in? Talk about your values that match theirs.
