Five to Focus on:
In a noisy world, it’s hard to know what’s good out there. Let me help.
Quote to ponder: “To get what you want, you have to deserve what you want. The world is not yet a crazy enough place to reward a whole bunch of undeserving people.” - Charlie Munger
Stock to consider: ALLY (Ally Financial)
Warren Buffett went in big. And that’s enough for me. Also, I love Ally, in particular, and online banking, in general, for the foreseeable future.
Disclaimer- this is not financial advice, I am not a financial advisor, and you should always do your own research.
Book to read: The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy
Darren is always short and sweet, so this is a quick read. If you’re new to self-improvement, it’ll be eye-opening. If you’re not new at this game, it’ll be full of lots of great reminders.
Show to enjoy: Elvis on HBO Max
It’s kinda weird. But in a unique way. It also starts strong, fades in the middle and rebounds at the end. If you can hang in for almost 3 hours, you’ll enjoy the ride.
Beer to sip: Hershey’s Chocolate Porter from Yuengling
I’m not a big fan of porters, but the Hershey porter always delighted. A great dessert style beer.
Master Yourself
Far too often we let fear dictate our lives and it makes no distinction between what scares you and what is dangerous for you.
In life there are things that are scary but not dangerous and things that are dangerous but not scary. It serves you well to understand the difference and recognize what’s what.
My two best examples are: public speaking vs driving.
Many of us are terrified to speak in front of others, but don’t think twice about driving ourselves to these events.
Yet, your chance of dying while driving is 1 in 107. Your chance of dying while public speaking? Effectively 0%.
So what you have is something that’s scary but not dangerous (public speaking) and then something that’s dangerous but not scary (driving). And the only real difference is lack of understanding and lack of exposure. We tend to drive more than we publicly speak, so it stands to reason we get more comfortable, more quickly, with driving.
Always stop to think- am I in danger or am I just scared?
Master Your Money
Track your net worth
You need to know where you are in order to help yourself get to where you’re going. On the 3rd of every month I add up my savings account plus my 401k plus my investment accounts to see my new net worth total. I don’t currently carry any debt, so nothing to subtract.
Add in property (minus mortgages and taxes) and any other assets as well. Subtract any debt and there you go, you have your net worth.
You may have months where your net worth dips, that’s okay, the market (both stock and real estate) is unpredictable. But over the years you want to see the trend inching upward. And it will if you’re doing the right things.
Weekly Special
6 Worthy Goals for Your Life
What do we want said about us at our funeral? How do we want to be remembered? What’s our legacy? These are all questions to ask yourself.
And even if you don’t care so much about that, if you’re reading this, you care about how you live. So here are some goals worthy of your time and effort.
Goal One: Change the world.
There’s a good chance you have an idea that can change the world. And even if that’s not true, your actions can create small ripples that ultimately impact the world. We are at once, both smaller and bigger than we think.
We’re a drop in the ocean in regards to world history. But our actions absolutely affect our current world. Changing the world doesn’t have to be this huge affair. We can change the world in many small ways. We can change our world and the world of those around us.
Goal Two: Improve lives.
This can be as simple as committing kind acts daily. You have the ability to share positivity and kindness and alter the lives of those around you, for free.
You can also take part in charities, whether with your time or money, that you feel create positive change. I have a handful of charities I donate to every year in an effort to do my part.
Goal Three: Invent something new.
Do you have something new to offer the world? Or even your community? Do it. Bring your idea to life and see what happens.
If you don’t have a new idea, at least offer a new take on something old. Life goals have been talked about before, but (hopefully) not like I did in this article.
Goal Four: Solve a complex problem.
There are many opportunities to solve problems. Use your own life. What’s a problem in your life that is unsolved? This is micro level problem solving and can be fantastic. Most likely if you’re suffering with something, other people are too.
Now, to solve a complex problem means (most likely) looking at the macro. An example of a truly complex problem is poverty. Solving a problem like that would certainly be a worthy life goal.
Goal Five: Extend your talents.
Offer your talents to those who may need them but can’t afford them. Volunteering for a charity is the easiest way. But this can also mean, take your talents to places that will pay you for them.
In my case, I’m good at writing, engaging people and following through. So I’ve volunteered for a couple of committees where I can offer these talents, free of charge, for causes much bigger and better than myself.
Goal Six: Build enduring relationships.
Make sure people matter and they know it. Connect with new people and see how you can help. Make sure to keep your long running relationships strong and relative. Striving to be a good person allows us to build the best relationships. It also pays to build the relationship with ourselves. You’re with you 24/7.
Double down on your greatest relationship. Mine is my girlfriend. Our best relationship gives us the highest return on investment.
