Five to Focus on:
In a noisy world, it’s hard to know what’s good out there. Let me help.
Quote to ponder: “Reject your sense of injury and the injury itself disappears.” - Marcus Aurelius
Stock to consider: MRVL (Marvell Technology)
Marvell Technology, Inc. engages in the provision of data infrastructure semiconductor solutions. It offers compute, networking, storage, and custom solutions. The firm designs, develops, and sells integrated circuits.
Disclaimer- this is not financial advice, I am not a financial advisor, and you should always do your own research.
Book to read: Indistractable by Nir Eyal
We live in a noisy world and we need to learn how to thrive in it. This book helps you do that. I’m always finding ways to get more done, and not just busy work, real work. Any book that can help me do that, gets read. Best takeaway? Timebox your schedule- you, relationships, work.
Show to enjoy: The Old Man on Hulu
James Bond as a 70 year old man. You didn’t think you needed to see that, but you do. Jeff Bridges does a great job as does the director. One of the better shows this year.
Beer to sip: Bull Pop from Bolero Snort
It’s summer time and nothing beats a top notch sour. Except 3 day weekends and kid free nights. Those are pretty good. Though in fairness, this is a Berliner Weisse (a milder sour).
Master Yourself
This gem is from James Clear, whom I absolutely adore. You should 100% subscribe to his weekly newsletter, 3–2–1 (https://jamesclear.com/3-2-1).
“The list of mistakes you can never recover from is very short.
But you likely realize your life will not be destroyed if your book doesn’t sell or if a potential date turns you down or if your startup goes bust. It’s not the failed outcome that paralyzes us. It’s the possibility of looking stupid, feeling humiliated, or dealing with embarrassment that prevents us from getting started at all.
The first step to being courageous is being willing to look foolish.”
How many things have you not done because you were afraid someone would laugh at you or judge you?
Everyone else is just as nervous as you are, so ignore the discomfort that comes before doing something amazing.
Master Your Money
Nothing’s Free
There’s a price to pay for building wealth.
Most often it’s sacrifice in the here and now.
Am I willing to give up fun today for freedom tomorrow? Yes.
Am I willing to stomach the volatility of watching 100k turn into 70k this month with the optimism it’ll turn into 1 million 20 years from now? Yes.
Make sure you’re willing to pay the price. It’s a fee, not a fine.
Also, pay attention to trade offs.
Nothing is free, remember? Office doughnuts cost your health. Netflix costs 10 bucks a month and a lot of your time.
Weekly Special:
90% of Success Comes from These 2 Things
I’m always interested in great quotes that I can break down further. Newsletters can be a great resource for these kind of quotes.
James Clear and Shane Parrish put out my 2 favorite newsletters. 3–2–1 and BrainFood, respectively. So you’ll see me reference them a lot. This week we’ve got another winner.
From the (excellent) BrainFood newsletter:
Ninety percent of success can be boiled down to consistently doing the obvious thing for an uncommonly long period of time without convincing yourself that you’re smarter than you are.
What does this mean to me?
What I call clean consistency and stupid smart.
- Clean consistency.
This means good habits repeated daily. For me it’s movement, reading, writing, same sleep/wake time, quality family time, lots of fruits/veggies. I make sure I’m doing all the small things, as well as I can, every day.
- Stupid smart.
This means knowing enough to know you don’t know enough. I second guess my opinions, I read a lot, I ask questions of myself and the world around me. I always remind myself that I’m not nearly as smart as I’d like to think I am.
These 2 things account for the majority of my success. And I consider myself very successful. In all the standard ways (money, career, etc.), but also in all the “soft” ways. Family life, relationships and mental/emotional health are all A+ categories for me.
Try your own version of clean consistency + stupid smart. Let the math change your life.
Thanks for reading and if you found this valuable, please share with someone who could use it. See you next Saturday!
