The Weekly Special: 7 Best Newsletters to Subscribe To (aside from this one, of course).
The goal here is maximum value, so let’s get to it.
Oh, by the way, if you’re feeling generous, please share this newsletter with a friend.
Five to Focus on:
In a noisy world, it’s hard to know what’s good out there. Let me help.
Quote to ponder: “At the end of the day, at the end of the week, at the end of my life, I want to say that I contributed more than I criticized.” - Brene Brown
Stock to consider: MOON (Direxion Moonshot Innovators). Offers exposure to the 50 most innovative US companies at the forefront of changing our lives today, and tomorrow, by identifying the companies both pursuing innovation, and having the potential to disrupt existing technologies and/or industries. Disclaimer- this is not financial advice, I am not a financial advisor, and you should always do your own research.
Book to read: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Trevor is very unapologetically himself, warts and all. And I can really appreciate that. Apartheid shouldn’t be funny, in fact it most definitely wasn’t. Throwing a child out of a moving car shouldn’t be funny, in fact it most definitely isn’t. Getting beat shouldn’t be funny, in fact it definitely sucks. Yet Trevor leaves us chuckling through some serious shit.
Show to enjoy: Ozark on Netflix. The Byrde family is back. And as delightful as ever. We just started the fourth and final season and it’s good. We’re here to watch the Ruth vs Wendy showdown that I’m sure they’ll spread across the entire season culminating in a fascinating final episode or two.
Beer to sip: Candy Hearts IPA from New Trail. Sweet IPAs are a true delight. We all like dessert and we all like beer. And while this isn’t what I would consider a true dessert beer, it has enough sweet tang to entice anyone’s taste buds. Oh just try it will ya?
Master Yourself
I have a simple challenge for you.
Walk around with a smile.
All day. Every day. For a whole week.
Even if shitty things are happening around you. Even if you’re not in the mood.
Keep smiling. Keep reminding yourself to smile. Yep, smile behind your mask. Smile on phone calls. Smile at your pets and your kids and your spouse. Smile on your Zoom calls. Smile to yourself when you wake up and before you go to bed. Smile in the shower. Smile on your walk around the neighborhood.
Then, at the end of the week, tell me you don’t feel fantastic. Tell me it doesn’t feel like it was your best week ever. Tell me people didn’t treat you better.
Master Your Money
If hard work alone was the answer to wealth, every construction worker would be a billionaire.
A financial education is what you need.
Leverage, iteration and compounding are force multipliers.
Leverage:
A real world example: borrowing money from the bank, at a low interest rate, to buy a home and then renting the home out. The goal would be to cover your costs and turn a profit.
Iteration:
Here’s a real world example, using Medium.
I write 3 articles on a similar topic.
I see 2 of the 3 perform well. I tweak those 2 and republish.
I find now 1 of them is outperforming the other. I tweak it again and rewrite a final draft.
This is the draft I now submit to a publication.
Compounding:
Compounding is a term you hear most often used in regard to investing. Your money compounds over time. This happens when you accrue interest on the principal and then interest on the interest, over and over again, over a period of years.
But, you can also compound your habits.
When you workout 3x week after a few months your results compound.
When you consistently write content, over time your work compounds and snowballs. You become a better writer and you start to grow an audience.
