Master Yourself
If you read even a handful of personal growth and/or self-help books and articles you’ll hear something repeated over and over. Something about waking up at 4 or 5 am being a keystone habit.
“It leads to success!” — everyone
But people don’t realize it’s a correlation, not a cause. Early rising is NOT the cause of success.
The real cause of success? Deep work + execution of plan.
It just so happens mornings are where most people can carve out 2–4 hours of uninterrupted time. Uninterrupted time is the cornerstone of productivity.
There are many good reasons to wake up early, but personally 5 is just too early.
I get up around 6:30 every morning but my routine is dialed in so my productivity is a level 9 or 10 most days.
Most people who get up early are using 4a/5a until 9a as time for deep work. If you can create deep work time at another point in your day, that’s just fine.
Get up whenever you want. Just make sure you find some time to get into a flow.

So, what’s the formula?
Dream Outcome x Perceived Likelihood of Achievement/Time Delay x Effort & Sacrifice = Value.
So, what does that mean?
Dream Outcome
What your client is hoping to ultimately achieve.
An example wouldn’t necessarily be 6 pack abs, but more like sweet dating scene that comes from having 6 pack abs.
Perceived Likelihood of Achievement
How likely it is that you’ll help them achieve their dream outcome.
Maybe you’ve helped a dozen middle aged divorced men get abs and fill their social calendar. That’s some serious social proof.
Time Delay
How long does the process take?
Are you able to deliver quick wins? The answer should be yes.
Of course you can’t deliver abs in a day. But you can help people shed 2–5 pounds in their first week and take their plank hold from 10 seconds to 30 seconds.
Effort & Sacrifice
How much do they have to give up? How hard do they have to work?
You’re going to have to find ways for them to build ab building into their daily routine. Food swaps, extra movement, ab exercises they can do at their desk, etc.
The goal in the equation is to increase the first two parts and decrease the second two parts.
Now, depending on your product or service, how much you can increase/decrease will vary widely.
But you should always be seeking to optimize the value of what you offer.
Weekly Special
9 Skills to Master to 10x Your Life
Every day, week and month should be a steady march toward gaining more skills. But a new year is a great time to really dig in to how you want to spend the next 12 months.
So as everyone else spends hours throwing prompts into ChatGPT, you can learn some truly valuable skills.
Speed Reading
Some people are really against speed reading. I’m not sure why. Reading faster lets you get through more books. That’s a good thing.
Speed reading is especially good when you’re young or new to an idea. You can always return to the great books and reread them slowly.
Critical thinking
A skill sorely lacking in schools. Schools teach you what to think, instead of how to think.
Critical thinking is a particular way of thinking. You observe, analyze, infer, communicate and ultimately problem solve.
Investing
Less a skill and more a lifestyle. Learn the basics quickly and then get to it.
There are very few barriers to entry left here. You can open accounts with low to no minimums. Fees are mostly non-existent on brokerage accounts. And info is everywhere.
Get started with ETFs, which allow you to bundle stocks and purchase a “theme”.
Playing an instrument
Music actually translates to increased brain power. It actually builds new neural connections.
It also improves your language and math center in your brain. Builds discipline and coordination. Improves memory and concentration.
There’s literally no downside.
Leadership
A skill that will carry you through a career.
Leadership isn’t a title. It’s a collection of personality traits.
Most people are not leaders, so if you are, you’ll stand out. And you’re also helpful to society. We need you.
Leaders are self-aware, resilient, visionary, open-mindedly decisive and many other things. All of which you can learn or increase your natural ability.
Public speaking
People who can communicate clearly in front of, and to others, will always be in high demand.
Public speaking is a fear for many people, they fear it more than death!

Productivity
Not the hum-drum wake up early stuff. Which does help, but isn’t the full answer.
It’s more about learning to focus on what you really need to do. If you can learn how to do deep work, you’ll be productive.
My deep work happens to occur from 6–9 every morning.
Data science
Data science is used to learn about people’s habits and processes, to create algorithms that handle enormous volumes of data rapidly and efficiently, to improve the security and privacy of sensitive data, and to assist data-driven decision-making.
This is going to be a very in-demand skill for many years to come.
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and control one’s own emotions as well as comprehend the emotions of others.
Building relationships, reducing team tension, defusing conflict, and improving job satisfaction are all benefits of having a high EQ.
Every leader needs to have a high EQ to be successful.
