Master Yourself
I’m going hit you with an MA quote out of the gate.
Which feels cliché since everyone is quoting ole Marcus in 2022.
Wonder which great will get the “everywhere, all the time” treatment in 2023?
Anyway, here’s the quote.
“Keep in mind how fast things pass by and are gone–those that are now and those to come.” — Marcus Aurelius
This reminds me of someone I saw on Twitter. He said he wished he knew when the “good old days were happening while they were happening”.
Well, there’s an easy fix.
Just assume they’re always happening.
Right now, I’m enjoying everything because this is the good old days in 10 years.
And 10 years ago I did the same thing. And in 10 years I’ll do the same thing.
Because you can’t pinpoint what parts of life will look magical down the road.
And chances are if you make it to 90, the whole thing will look pretty magical.
Take time right now to pause and enjoy your life as it is. It’ll never be this way again.
Master Your Money
“Too much of what is called ‘education’ is little more than an expensive isolation from reality.” - Thomas Sowell
The doing is more important than the discussing.
And our academic world loves to discuss more and do less.
Learn what you can via traditional education and self-education.
But more importantly? Apply what you learn. Doing will always be the greatest teacher.
And my main point? Consider not spending 200k on a college degree. Get out in the world and get your hands dirty.
Weekly Special
The Art of Doing Hard Things
Why Hard Things Matter
Doing easy things is soothing and it helps create flow. So, I’m not here to bash easy.
Most of my days are spent in “easy” mode, quite honestly.
So, I’m just here to tell you why hard things matter.
Hard things build you into who you’re supposed to become.
The best version of you can’t be built by doing only easy things.
Parenting is hard. Giving up on your kids is harder.
Writing is hard. Not doing what we love is harder.
The war in Ukraine is hard. Not being free is harder.
How to Get Through Hard Things
The 5 Second Rule from Mel Robbins.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 go. Your alarm goes off, up and outta bed.
You think of working out…shoes on and go!
You get the idea.
Break big things into small things.
Big things look overwhelming.
How the f*ck am I supposed to write a piece of content every day?
By writing the first sentence of Monday’s article.
“You can quit tomorrow” trick.
A mental trick I use on myself.
If I feel like quitting today…I tell myself you can quit tomorrow. And I finish my day.
Rarely do I have a second “quit” day in a row.
