Master Yourself
Do you know what you do every 9.6 seconds of the waking day?
Have a thought.
Your synapses is firing nonstop.
This is what I call a raging brain.
How the hell do you slow it all down so it’s more functional?
Meditation is an obvious answer. And a good one.
But, that’s not it.
It’s:
Bedside notepad
Selective inputs
Specific worrying
One: Keep a little notepad next to the bed. If something is rolling around your brain, jot it down. It helps you go to sleep and you’ll see in the morning if it’s still something to concern yourself with.
Two: Get highly selective about your inputs. What does this mean? Quality books. No news. A curated Twitter feed. Time in nature. No toxic socializing, only positive people.
Three: And to round it out, only “worry” about what matters, that you can control. If it falls within that criteria, focus on it. Otherwise, let it go.
Master Your Money
Investing can look all different.
There are people making hundreds or thousands every year in stocks. That’s one form of investing.
There are people earning hundreds or thousands writing articles on Medium. That’s investing in yourself and leveraging a skill.
I know people who earn a few hundred a month on rental properties (while building equity). That’s investing in real estate.
I know people who run their own hustles (selling homemade crafts, reselling sneakers, etc.). That’s investing in owning a business.
You have to invest, that non-negotiable. But do it your own way.
Weekly Special
The Success Formula: Growth + Gratitude
A good life requires plenty of self-improvement.
28 year old you should cringe at 18 year old you. And 38 year old you should really cringe at both 18 and 28 year old you.
If you want good things to happen to you, Growth is mandatory.
The problem is when you’re in grow mode, you often find yourself in go mode- all of the time.
And suddenly you realize you’re not present in your day to day life. You’re always building for some future you think you can control the outcome of. You start growing just for growing’s sake.
This is where that second half of the success formula comes into play- Gratitude.
Growth
Phase 1: Self-improvement
This is the ‘mental game’ phase of growth.
You need to shift your mindset to one of resilience, self-control, mastery, etc.
For me this meant a lot of reading.
And YouTube videos.
I wanted to learn the ways of successful people.
What did they think? What did they do? How did they respond to things? How do they view the world, their own life, etc.?
It also required a lot of questions of myself. What do I really want? What am I doing that I should stop? What am I not doing that I should be doing? Am I ready to commit to this process?
Phase 2: Habits
This is the ‘action’ phase of growth.
Reading and learning alone won’t do much for you. You need to start putting things into action.
You need to pick the things most important to you and build around them.
My Core Four are health, relationships, work and finances.
Therefore I layer my day full of habits that serve those 4 pillars.
Phase 3: Financial Education
This is the part that lets you buy your freedom.
Once you learn how money works, nothing is ever the same.
It’s a simple process:
learn how to make money
learn how to keep money
learn how to make more money
learn how to grow money
Within each bullet point, there are various things to learn. So yes, it’s a simple process but not necessarily easy.
Making money- learn how to sell, write and market.
Keeping money- learn how to budget and live below your means.
Growing money- learn how to invest.
Gratitude
Phase 4: Gratitude exercises
These exercises are simple. You run through a list of what you appreciate and are thankful for.
At least morning and night. Preferably throughout your day.
I’ve gotten to the point where pretty much everything I set my eyes on or think about, I’m grateful for. It’s a beautiful thing.
Phase 5: Serving others
You’re a hollow being if you don’t learn to serve others.
Serve your family, donate to charity, volunteer your time, help people on the internet who have questions, send birthday cards to your friends.
There are a million ways to serve others and help them and make them feel good.
Phase 6: Meditation
This is for clarity and clearer thinking in a noisy world.
Meditation is hard at first. In this day and age it’s strange to be alone and quiet with our thoughts.
I promise you if you stick with it, you will not regret it. Start with 5 minutes in the morning. Add minutes as you get better.
Just sit and focus on your breathing. Let your thoughts come and go. Don’t get frustrated or annoyed. Just accept and let them go.
