Master Yourself
It feels wrong to categorize people in terms of what they can and cannot do you for you.
I get it.
But that’s not quite what I want you to do.
It’s more about you having to know peoples’ limitations and accepting them for who they are without resentment.
I first thought of this in terms of my girlfriend’s one friend.
The two were very close, hung out a lot and the friend is loving and fun. Great woman.
But here’s what I told my girlfriend, she cannot help you with your alcoholism. Your friend is incapable of helping you through such an issue.
She’s limited in her capacity. She’s kind of a mess herself.
She doesn’t have the ability to be what you need right now, in this particular fight.
This idea extends to all the people in your life.
Understand what they can and cannot do for you.
I cannot be a great shoulder to cry on. I have limited patience for feelings and tears.
But I can be great in helping you problem solve.
I hope I’m not resented for being a dud in the first role.
Don’t expect from your mother, brother, best friend things they cannot give you.
Accept their limitations. Love them regardless. Let them use their strengths with you and then find what else you need from others.
And set boundaries around your limitations. Be there for people in the ways you’re best at. Let them find the rest in others.
Master Your Money
Too many people think money is the goal of life.
How much do you need?
How much do you want?
1 million? 10 million? 100 million?
I’ve been told by very smart people, wealthy people that 10 million is the goal. Anything below that and you’re “eh”.
You’re still poor.
This might sound crazy to most of us.
“Wow, if I had 5 million I’m still poor?? Sounds suspect.”
Here’s the thing, money isn’t the goal. It never was.
What’s the 1 thing you’d give up?
You would give up all the money have when you’re 80 to be 30 again.
Money is not the goal. I’ll keep saying it.
Freedom is. Time is.
“But you need money to gain freedom!”
True. Kind of.
But lack of money doesn’t stop you from looking for ways to have freedom now.
During the pandemic my girlfriend moved to a 4 day workweek.
Could she go back to 5 days and make a little more now? Yes. Will she? Absolutely not.
I started working remote during the pandemic.
You’ll never see me in an office 5 days a week again. Ever.
Do your kids each do 3 extracurriculars?
Make them pick 1. Buy back some of your (and theirs) evenings and weekends.
Are you working 80 hour weeks to make 150k/year when you could get by on 80k/year and work 40 hour weeks?
There are a million little ways to find more time and freedom right now.
You don’t need 10 million dollars. You just need your days to count like you have 10 million in the bank.
Weekly Special
5 Skills You Need to Prepare for the Fast Future
The future is coming at us faster than it ever has in history.
Our technological growth has become exponential, not linear. And that means the world will look totally different even 20 years from now.
Here are the top 5 skills that will carry you into the future successfully.
Uber Adaptability
Iterate daily.
You have to change and assume change. It’s the only constant moving forward.
Un-learn what you need to un-learn.
There’s a ton of new shit coming. Be ready to rewire your brain. Seek patterns, forget boxes. Everything that’s coming is outside the box as we know it.
Intel Gathering
From everywhere. All the best info, from anywhere in the world.
The less familiar it is to you, the better off you’ll be.
Get social, use it wisely. Use Twitter and YouTube as learning platforms.
Full Immersion
As in, immerse yourself.
Live in the topics you’re studying. Absorb cultures. Experiment.
I’m trying my best to live in the metaverse, Web 3.0, NFTs and crypto so I understand it and see what’s coming.
Every day I’m reading about those topics. I’m trying my hand at them.
Creation x 10
You are no longer just a consumer. You can’t afford to be.
Create words, video, infographics, podcasts. Keep your eye on new tech and create there.
Find platforms or create your own. Then pump out quality content.
You’re now 10 to 1 a creator vs consumer.
Clean Communication
How you express yourself matters. It’s your job to be understood.
Not everyone may be ready for your message though.
But, become very clear. Use simple words. Write simple sentences. Condense difficult matter into digestible points.
